14 Best Horror Movies On Amazon Prime Video

Hey horror movie lovers, today we’re talking the best horror movies on Amazon Prime! It astounds me how many people pay for Amazon Prime and don’t realize that there’s a whole streaming service included in your subscription. Now, you’re no longer one of those people. You’re welcome.

I’ve done a butt load of research to put together this list of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime, and given the atrocity that is the Amazon Prime interfaces, it’s been a journey.

I need to make a distinguishing factor here. These movies are all included in Prime, not from Freevee or Amc + or any of the other subscription services they try pushing on you. Although, the horror movies provided by Freevee (with ads) is pretty extensive, so if you want that in another blog post, let me know.

I should also mention I’m in the US, which matters a lot when it comes to these streaming services.

These are all included in Prime, and although now we peasants have to sit through ads even on Amazon Prime for who knows what reason (thanks Bezos) these movies are still worth your time, especially if you pay for Prime already.

Speaking of Prime, did you see my video where I unboxed some fantastic horror finds I found on Amazon? If not go check it out here.

There is no specific order to this list of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime other than how they popped up when I was browsing on my desktop or phone. Oh, and I also made it very convenient by including links to each movie down in the description for you.

Event Horizon (1997)

event-horizon-best-horror-movie-on-amazon-prime

Although it was hard to discover that this is on Amazon Prime, we horror fans are spoiled with the fact that Event Horizon is available to stream on the service. This sci-fi horror takes us into space as we face the unknown. The dude from Jurassic Park(Sam Neill), Morpheus(Laurence Fishburne), and Lucius Malfoy(Jason Isaacs) are part of a rescue crew who is tasked with investigating the mysterious reappearance of a spaceship that has been lost for seven years. This film has some of the most disturbing imagery in horror history, and the original cut was too violent for the studio execs. The final product is still worth checking out.

Saint Maud (2019)

saint-maud-movie-poster-amazon-prime-horror-movies

Saint Maud is a slow burn(heh) film with the premise of the movie being a nurse taking care of a new patient and feeling like she has to save her soul. The main character goes on quite the religious journey. This wasn’t my favorite horror film -I’m not the biggest fan of slow burns- but it did contain one of the most memorable and shocking ending scenes in recent horror cinema. Because it’s a slow burn you can expect a lot of atmosphere and build-up in this one.

The Descent (2005)

the-descent-streaming-on-amazon-prime

The Descent is a classic that’s turning 20 soon and is not for the faint of heart. In this film, we follow a group of friends going on a caving expedition when things go wrong and they find themselves trapped. On top of that, they realize they may not be alone down in those eerie depths. Expect to feel a bit claustrophobic throughout The Descent. So much about the filmmaking makes this a great movie to put on in most occasions, but also, isn’t this one of the coolest horror movie posters ever? If you watch The Descent, make sure to look up both endings as well.

Smile (2022)

smile-horror-movie-streaming

From this entire list, I probably wouldn’t start with Smile, but it is a horror movie from recent memory that actually surprised me. It’s not perfect by any means, and it has a third act that is entirely underwhelming. However, I won’t hold that against it too much, because there are a lot of horror movies that fail to stick their landings. Smile follows a mental health professional as she experiences a traumatizing incident involving one of her patients, and shortly afterwards begins experiencing weird, supernatural occurrences and believes she’s being threatened by an uncanny entity.

Coherence (2013)

where-to-stream-coherence-horror-movie

Coherence is the perfect movie to go into blind, especially if you like mind-fuck movies. Coherence is about a fun little dinner amongst friends. And that’s all I’m going to say about it. Also a great movie to catch if you liked 2009’s Triangle. I had to double check that Triangle came out in …. 2009. Jesus, I’m old.

Get Out (2017)

where-to-stream-get-out

Get Out was Jordan Peele’s directorial debut, and it’s the highest rated movie on this list, probably because it had major mainstream success. This flick is about a dude hitting the road with his girlfriend to go meet her family. Pretty typical rom-com setup, right? Except in Get Out, shit starts getting weird pretty quick. Chris starts noticing some really odd things happening, and he slowly starts to unravel that this isn’t just an awkward family meet-and-greet. Get Out is a great mix of scares and dives deep into topics like racism and identity. Definitely worth a watch.

Cloverfield (2008)

Cloverfield blew my mind back in 2008 when it was released. I remember thinking to myself, in my naive little highschool mind, “This looks like it could actually be taking place in NY right now.” It was groundbreaking for me and sparked my adoration of the found footage genre.

The nonstop chaos of Cloverfield has us follow a group of friends during an unexpected attack on the city and makes you feel like you’re right there in the action running for your life through the streets of New York.

Although the sequels didn’t quite live up to the hype, Cloverfield is a must-watch for any horror fan, and it’s one of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime.

Cocaine Bear (2023)

Now, I realize that no one is going around saying Cocaine Bear is the greatest horror movie of modern times, okay? But it is a lot of fun.

On paper, it’s crazy that so many big name actors got on board with this thing, but then again, it’s also directed by Elizabeth Banks. I think the outrageous and campy nature of the basis of the film is part of its charm and appeal. This is perfect to throw on with a group of friends as the jokes just keep coming and coming.

Enjoy this film about a black bear who unintentionally ingests some cocaine out in a Georgia forest and goes on a murdering rampage because of it.

Cooties (2014)

horror-comedy-streaming

Continuing in the vein of horror comedy, Cooties is a 2014 film that is loved by many. A mysterious food virus turns elementary school children into killer zombies, and the teachers must band together to survive and escape.

This horror comedy features some of our favorite actors like Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Jack McBrayer, and horror legend Leigh Whannell. If you’re seeking great gory kills brought to you by a bunch of zombie Jrs, this is the film for you.

Hell House LLC (2015)

best-found-footage-horror-movies-streaming

I’m a bit biased here since my favorite subgenre of horror is found footage, but even within that subgenre, it felt like Hell House was a breath of fresh air, and you’re lucky it’s streaming on Amazon Prime.

In Hell House LLC, a group of friends who run a traveling haunted house company decide to set up their next attraction in an abandoned hotel in Abaddon, New York. The crew thinks it’s the perfect place for their haunted house because of the dark secrets the hotel holds, but once they get things set up, the true terror of the hotel is shown.

This film spawned three sequels so far, all worth checking out, so if you go down this rabbit hole, you’ll be preoccupied for a bit.

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018)

korean-found-footage-horror-movie

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is a korean found footage horror film where a web series crew decide to explore a notably haunted psychiatric hospital in South Korea. What starts as a fun exploration quickly spirals into a nightmare.

If the premise sounds familiar at all, you may be thinking of Grave Encounters, which came 7 years before it. In Grave Encounters, there’s also a camera crew who is filming for their paranormal show who is trying to stage stuff and experiences real-life spookiness.

If you choose to watch this movie tonight just know it’s in Korean and you’ll have to put subtitles on, unless you speak Korean. This flick definitely rivals some of the best found footage horror movies out there.

Hellraiser (1987)

original-hellraiser-streaming

Next up is Hellraiser, and I’m talking about the original from 1987, not the remake or any of the 20 sequels. I admittedly have yet to give the 2022 remake a proper viewing. Is it worth watching? The original Hellraiser is a masterclass on practical effects and will have you saying what the fuck more times than you can count, and you may recognize some common horror quotes that actually came from this flick.

How can I quickly paraphrase the plot for you guys. A man buys a mysterious antique puzzle box and solves it, which causes these other-worldly beings called cenobites to kill him and take his soul, and then the man sets out on a journey to escape their underworld. I think that’s plenty of plot without spoiling too much. You gotta go watch this.

Terrifier (2018)

where-to-stream-terrifier

If you’re into gory, disturbing, mean-spirited flicks then Terrifier is perfect for you. I’m personally not the biggest fan, I think it’s a little over-hyped, but there is absolutely a strong following who love this movie and its sequel. Art the clown is our killing-spree villain in Terrifier, and in the first movie, Tara Heyes finds herself as his obsession on Halloween night. Most horror fans think the 2nd movie is even better, so if you like this gorefest, go watch Terrifier 2 as well.

Suspiria (2018)

new-suspiria-remake-streaming

Brought to us by Amazon Studios themselves, Suspiria is a remake of the classic that graced our screens way back in 1977. Well, not my screen personally … I’m not THAT old.

This is a remake that some think is better than the original, so if you like this remake, it’s probably worth seeking out the original as well, although the movies do differ a lot. The movie has an all-star female cast with names like Tilda Swinton, Chloe Moretz, Mia Goth, and Dakota Johnson bringing the script to life. It’s a dreadful and uncomfortable experience from start to end.

Essentially, Susie is an aspiring young ballerina who travels to study at a renowned dancing company in Berlin. On her first day there, one of the students who had recently been expelled is murdered, setting off a mystery that Susie must work to unravel and overcome.

That is going to conclude my list of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime right now. To be honest, there are hundreds of horror movies available to stream on the platform, so it’s going to be hard to find those hidden gems amongst the pile of garbage that can be found.

That’s what I’m here for.

After you watch these movies, please come back and let me know in the comments what you thought, or let me know some hidden gems that should be included in the next one. These streaming services are ever-changing, so there’s no doubt I’ll be making more of these later.
