UNDERRATED SLASHER FILMS

1. Timber Falls

This movie got a lot of undeserved hate when it came out, and probably because of the density of homages to classic slashers. So on the originality front, perhaps it’s lacking, but overall as a slasher movie? It kicks ass.

A couple’s mountain hiking trip takes a terrifying turn when they are kidnapped by a group of religious fanatics. Held captive in a remote cabin, they are forced into a twisted plan to conceive a child for their captors. As their situation grows increasingly violent and disturbing, the couple must rely on their wits and each other to survive the horrifying ordeal and escape the woods alive.

2. Sick

This one is way tighter than it has any right to be. Written by Kevin Williamson (Scream), this one moves fast, hits hard, and actually delivers on the chase sequences. No wasted time, no filler.

5. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Starts like a mockumentary, then slowly turns into a full-blown slasher. It plays with the “rules” in a way that’s way smarter than it looks.

The next great psycho horror slasher has given a documentary crew exclusive access to his life as he plans his reign of terror over the sleepy town of Glen Echo, all the while deconstructing the conventions and archetypes of the horror genre for them.

6. You Might Be The Killer

A slasher with self-awareness that actually works. It leans into the absurdity without killing the tension completely. This is a great palette cleanser between some of the darker picks on this list.

Sam is stuck at a summer camp where his fellow counselors are being picked off in a crazed murder spree. He calls in his friend Chuck, a horror movie buff and comic book store manager, to help make sense of what’s happening before the killer gets to him. But in true horror movie fashion, there may be a twisted logic to the plot that only Chuck can unravel—which means anyone could be the killer—including him.

7. The Last Matinee

The Last Matinee has that classic slasher energy with a modern edge. In 1993, spectators at the last screening of a horror film at a downtown cinema fall one by one into the hands of a sadistic and ruthless killer.
