As the year comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the best horror movies of 2024. From unique creature features to Golden Globe-worthy body horror, there’s something here for everyone. Don’t get me wrong, there were some stinkers this year as well, but that’s a conversation for another day. Here are my favorite 15 horror movies of the year, and as a bonus I’ve included where you can stream them right now.
Table of Contents
Honorable Mention: Strange Darling

15. Maxxxine
Starting off our list of the best horror movies of 2024 is Maxxxine. Maxxxine wraps up Ti West’s X trilogy with a wild, neon-drenched journey into 1980s Hollywood as Maxine finally chases her dream of stardom. While the film boasts some of the best horror moments of the year and is undeniably fun, it didn’t quite pack the punch I was hoping for, feeling a bit underwhelming overall.
That said, Mia Goth shines once again as the trilogy’s standout star, alongside great performances from Kevin Bacon and Giancarlo Esposito. The blatant homages to Psycho are a treat for horror fans and give a satisfying sense of closure to this trilogy.
Be sure to watch X and Pearl before diving into this one to fully appreciate Maxine’s journey. It lands at number 15 on my list—an enjoyable, if not groundbreaking, conclusion to the trilogy.

14. Abigail
Abigail is a delightful horror-comedy romp that doesn’t take itself too seriously, making it a fun and entertaining watch. We spend the night with a group of criminals who kidnap a young girl and retreat to an isolated mansion to hold her for ransom. However, things quickly go wrong when young Abigail (played brilliantly by Alisha Weir) reveals she might have a sinister secret that turns their posh evening into a chaotic battle for survival.
With vibes reminiscent of Ready or Not, it delivers laughs and thrills, even if it doesn’t quite reach the same level of sharp writing or tonal balance. The cast, including Melissa Barrera (Scream), Dan Stevens (Cuckoo, The Guest), and Kevin Durand, brings charm and energy to the film, with Weir’s performance stealing the show.
A heartfelt tribute to Angus Cloud, who also graced this film with his talent—he’s dearly missed and left an indelible mark on everything he touched.

13. Arcadian
In the realm of survival horror, a new entry has made its mark, intriguing audiences with its vivid imagery and classic frights. Arcadian, available on Shudder, revolves around a father and his two sons navigating the treacherous landscape of a post-apocalyptic world. As night falls, they face the terror of creatures attempting to invade their home, a plot that, while familiar, is executed with compelling visuals and suspenseful storytelling.
This movie stands out as a surprising gem, offering a fresh perspective on the survival horror theme, and shoutout to Nicolas Cage, who stars in two of the best horror movies of 2024.

12. The Devil’s Bath
The Devil’s Bath is a haunting Austrian-German historical horror drama that weaves a chilling tale of love, isolation, and despair. The film follows Agnes as she prepares for married life, only to discover that her new reality is far from the idyllic future she envisioned.
Tackling heavy themes like the oppressive weight of patriarchy, depression, and emotional isolation, this movie isn’t a casual watch—it’s a deeply affecting experience that lingers long after the credits roll.
Though it’s not for every mood, The Devil’s Bath is a unique and underrated gem that deserves more recognition. Stream it now on Shudder to immerse yourself in its beautifully bleak world.

11. Terrifier 3
Terrifier 3 is a blood-soaked spectacle that delivers exactly what gorehounds crave: brutally creative kills, relentless tension, and Art the Clown at his most sadistic.
While its mean-spirited tone and tenacious pacing keep the adrenaline pumping, it falls short of its predecessor, Terrifier 2, especially when it comes to delving into Art’s mysterious lore. Still, the film is a massive achievement for the horror genre, raking in huge box office numbers and proving that hardcore gore has a place in the mainstream.
With a fourth installment already announced, Terrifier 3 is a worthy watch and lands at number 11 on my list for the year. Definitely not for the faint of heart!
Where to Buy: You can rent/buy Terrifier 3 digitally or buy a physical copy on Amazon and it’s also still in select theaters!

10. Tarot
Despite expecting some criticism for its inclusion, Tarot secures the tenth spot on the list. This PG-13 horror film centers around a group of college students who uncover a set of tarot cards in the basement of their Airbnb mansion, leading to a series of foreboding predictions about their fates.
The movie combines elements of Final Destination and Thir13en Ghosts, where each card summons a creature that embodies the depicted fate, adding a playful yet eerie twist to the narrative. Available on Netflix, Tarot is a fun, turn-your-brain-off movie, perfect for those looking for light-hearted scares without the complexity of more serious horror films.

9. V/H/S Beyond
If you’re a found footage hound like myself, you were oozing at the mouth when V/H/S Beyond was announced. Beyond takes the beloved found footage franchise to terrifying new heights with a UFO and alien encounter theme that will leave you both horrified and fascinated.
The seventh installment doesn’t hold back, delivering a mix of body horror, existential dread, and the signature chaotic energy fans of the series adore. With standout segments from directors Justin Long and Kate Siegel, and Mike Flanagan lending his writing talents, this anthology is packed with creative storytelling and unsettling visuals. One of the strongest entries in the franchise, V/H/S Beyond is an absolute must-watch for found footage fans. It’s number 9 on my list and can be streamed on Shudder!

8. Immaculate
Immaculate is a thrilling standalone religious horror film that combines eerie Catholic undertones with a unique twist—think Jurassic Park, but swap out dinosaurs for something far more sinister.
‘Cecilia, a woman of devout faith, is warmly welcomed to the picture-perfect Italian countryside where she is offered a new role at an illustrious convent. But it becomes clear to Cecilia that her new home harbors dark and horrifying secrets.’
As the tension builds, the final 15 minutes deliver pure chaos, taking the story off the rails in the best possible way.
Sydney Sweeney’s performance is a standout, with one particular scene cementing her status as an immediate scream queen. While The First Omen edges ahead on my list for its unsettling atmosphere, Immaculate packs a punch with its gripping finale and fresh take on religious horror. An absolute must-watch for fans of the genre!

7. The First Omen
The First Omen delivers a chilling and atmospheric dive into the origins of the iconic Omen franchise, unraveling the unsettling events that foreshadow the rise of ultimate evil. With its deeply unsettling tone and masterful cinematography, this film grips you from the first frame and refuses to let go.
Even if you’re not familiar with the original Omen films, this prequel stands on its own, offering a haunting experience packed with genuinely terrifying moments.
As someone who typically doesn’t delve deeply into this franchise, I found it incredibly engaging. The First Omen narrowly edged out Immaculate for spot 7 on my list, and both are must-watches for fans of religious horror. This one, however, hits a little harder with its unnerving atmosphere and expertly crafted tension.

6. Longlegs
Longlegs, one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2024, lives up to its hype by delivering a gripping narrative starring Nicholas Cage and Maika Monroe. The film follows a rookie FBI agent, played by Monroe, who teams up with the FBI to capture a notorious serial killer known as Longlegs, portrayed by an unrecognizable Cage.
The movie starts with a vibe reminiscent of Seven, Prisoners, and Zodiac, but takes a unique turn as the plot progresses. Although not yet available for streaming, Longlegs can be rented or purchased digitally, offering a cinematic experience enriched with a complex ARG (Alternate Reality Game) that engaged audiences beyond the screen.

5. Late Night with the Devil
Late Night with the Devil stands out as one of the year’s most unique horror films , capturing the essence of supernatural horror with a clever twist. Set on Halloween night in 1977, the film follows a struggling talk show host who, in a desperate bid to boost ratings, invites a supposedly possessed girl onto his show. The movie not only nails the 1970s aesthetic but also excels in creating a tense atmosphere that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Oddity finds its place high on this list of best horror movies of 2024 due to its intriguing plot and atmospheric execution. The story follows an oddity shop owner who travels to her deceased twin sister’s home to unravel the mystery of her sister’s murder. Directed by Damen McCarthy, known for Caveat, the film excels in creating a creepy ambiance and includes several Easter eggs for keen viewers.
Initially rated as a middle-of-the-road film, a subsequent rewatch significantly enhanced its appeal, proving that Oddity is a film that grows on you and one of the best horror movies of 2024. Now streaming on Shudder, this film is a must-watch for those who appreciate a blend of mystery and horror with a touch of the uncanny.

3. Alien: Romulus
Alien: Romulus emerges as a significant addition to the Alien franchise, directed by the acclaimed creator of Don’t Breathe and the Evil Dead remake. Set between the events of Alien and Aliens, the film explores the desperate escape of a group of young adults from their oppressive homeworld. Their journey leads them to an abandoned spacecraft, where they encounter the dreaded Xenomorphs.
The film’s exceptional cinematography and its role as a bridge connecting new and classic Alien films have been widely appreciated, although some debate exists regarding the overuse of AI technology in the movie. I had the pleasure of watching Alien: Romulus in the IMAX (the best setting for this movie IMO), but it’s also fantastic to watch in the comfort of your own home.

Another Shudder exclusive that has captured the attention of horror enthusiasts is Exhuma. This atmospheric Korean horror film intertwines elements of folklore with a modern narrative, making it a standout piece in the genre. The plot revolves around two men hired to relocate a potentially cursed gravesite, but their task spirals into chaos due to unforeseen supernatural forces. The film is praised for its beautiful cinematography and the way it masterfully blends shocking twists and deep cultural narratives, making it a sleeper hit of the year.
For fans of Asian horror, Exhuma offers a unique and mesmerizing experience that is both culturally rich and visually stunning.

1. The Substance
Topping the list of the best horror movies of 2024 is The Substance, a movie that has captivated audiences with its profound narrative and exceptional execution. Starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Randy Quaid, the film delves into the unsettling theme of aging and the extreme lengths one might go to preserve youth and beauty.
The plot centers around Moore’s character, an aging Hollywood star who turns to a mysterious company offering a youth-enhancing product known as ‘The Substance.’ This leads to a series of horrifying events that not only question the ethics of such a product but also provide a commentary on societal pressures and the objectification of women.
The film’s body horror elements are brilliantly crafted, with sound design that makes viewers cringe in the best possible way. The cinematography and editing are unique, setting The Substance apart from other horror films this year.
